The fiber optic connector is an essential component of virtually any optical fiber communication system. As such, the performance of fiber optic connectors are critical components in the overall performance of the optical fiber communication systems. As the demand for faster data processing and transmission has increased, optical fiber connectors are required to operate at higher transmission rates and at lower loss levels. For example, the demand for higher data transmission rates has led to the desire to achieve a larger number of splices between optical fibers. In the past, to achieve a desired number of splices, more splice cases (i.e., the devices which hold the optical fibers prior to splicing) were required. However, each splice case could not be used for other splices, therefore, increasing the amount of unused splice cases. Furthermore, if a new protocol was being deployed, then a different type of splice case would be required for that new protocol. This problem was addressed in U.S. Pat. No. 4,600,186 (“the '186 patent”), which discloses a fiber optic connector that permits optical fibers to be connected, disconnected, and reconnected. The fiber optic connector includes a ferrule having a connector body with a depending, claw-shaped projection at a front end and a rear end. Each optical fiber is retained by the claw-shaped projection such that the fiber optic connector is connectable to a mating connector or other fiber optic connector. In addition, the fiber optic connector can be disconnected from the mating connector or other fiber optic connector by forcing the fibers out of the connector body and then pulling the ferrule away from the connector body.
